We bought this last may. Out of warrenty, ugh what a bummer. It worked great.until last week when it decided that it would no longer reconise any disc. Today I finally got the time to check things out, we bought it 1 yr 2 days ago. We had no other problems with it. It worked way better than our last Panasonic dvd player.
The Sony upscaling DVD player is lightweight, small and unintrusive. It's great to see the entire image now. The Sony must be turned on in order to open the tray. The picture is crisp and clear using an S Video cable, and the sound blows you away. But with study and perserverance it all makes sense, then it's great. It is easier to understand dialogue than on my bother's TV. It works beautifully without being "in your face". I had only two minor objections: my last player turned on when I opened the tray.
Also, the picture ratio of the Sony player fits my widescreen LCD TV, whereas the last DVD player I had looked distorted unless I used Zoom. Then I lost the outside edges of the movies. And the direction booklet is a bit daunting and not completely user-friendly. Thumbs up to Sony.
I was very impressed by the many 5 star reviews on Amazon. But now that I've got the Sony, I don't see a significant difference from the very old and cheap DVD player that I've been using for 5 years.
Unit works and looks good, decent price but really should have buttons on unit to skip to the next track for CD play (you must use the remote for this).
Now I have to watch all of my dvds again to see what I have missed. WE hooked this player up to my new 46in Panasonic plasma 1080p tv. WOW. The movies I've seen so far are nearly perfect. My friend has a Blue-ray and was astonished how this Sony does so well.
